In a region where barbecue is almost a religion, getting top honors is no small feat. Since 1971, people have enjoyed coming to Pierce's Pitt Bar-B-Que for lip-smacking, hickory-smoked, Tennessee-style barbecue made with Julius C. "Doc" Pierce's original barbecue sauce. It's that combination that brings them back, says Andrea Hutchinson, Pierce's director of operations. "We are known for our hand-chopped, pulled pork marinated in our own special sauce," she says. Order a sandwhich - they come in regular, jumbo and Super Doc. Sides include slaw and French fries, but new this year are Southern-style collards and macaroni and cheese. - Patrick Evans-Hylton
